CAS Club Feature: LGB’s World Cultural Awareness Club

At the LGB school campus, there are as many as 88 different nationalities enrolled. It is very important to identify and appreciate the vast cultural differences between students, some of which are not always acknowledged.

The World Cultural Awareness Club at LGB provides a safe space to address and explore the many aspects of our valuable cultural diversity, including the negative issues and global events that sometimes arise from deeply embedded preconceptions that manifest as discrimination, racism and xenophobia.

At the weekly club meetings, discussions center around identifying the common ground that we (as students and as people) share, an awareness that could end the problems created by prejudice. If we want to function optimally as a society in the future, we must ensure that all people are not just thought equal but are viewed and treated equally, regardless of national and cultural background and race.

The club is also active in raising awareness by organizing two to three events a year, such as the series of interviews at LGB on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21), a summary of which is presented in an insightful video (provided below).

The World Cultural Awareness Club was founded and is supervised by Ms. Oberai, and meets every Tuesday at lunch in room GB 202. You can follow the club on Instagram @lgbworldculturalawareness, or contact Ms. Oberai to join. Anyone from any year group is welcome! Membership to the club also offers CAS credit in the areas of creativity and service.
