A Year 11’s Inspiring Service Project: ‘Spread Some Kindness’

Project and article by Stella Eihausen, Year 11

‘Spread Some Kindness’ is a service project that I started back in December 2021. I don’t know about you, but personally, random acts of kindness from my friends and strangers alike never fail to make my day. Sometimes when my friends are sad about something or seem kind of down I like to write them small notes in between classes with something to cheer them up or just to let them know that I am here for them. My friends do this for me too and I always feel very touched when I receive a note.

As a year 11 student, I have to do some service throughout this year and as my mentor was discussing ideas, I became inspired by this exchange that I do with my friends and the overall concept of random acts of kindness. Therefore, I thought: Why don’t I make a project out of this idea for the whole school to participate in?

At first, I was quite unsure if LGB students would even like the idea and take part in it. However, as I told more and more people about it, I realized that this could spread some kindness (hence the project name) around school and possibly brighten someone’s day during a stressful time.

I decided to hang drop-boxes, which I made with shoeboxes and wrapping paper, in each building of the school for people to anonymously drop small notes into for their crushes, friends, teachers, and really anyone! Then, I began to advertise… I made posters, as seen above, and hung them around school before the holiday break. In addition, I created an Instagram account @spreadsomekindness__service which you can go follow if you like in order to see updates on this project.

As people began to drop notes around the school, I started to feel very hopeful about the project and I was excited to see so many people participating. Unfortunately, there were several that I had to throw away due to being inappropriate and not actual notes of kindness. On the bright side though, I was extremely excited and overwhelmed with the HUGE amount of loving, funny, and sweet notes there were in the boxes.

My original plan was to type up the notes and hang them in the Grand Bâtiment on large boards during the last week of school before the holiday break. However, this has now been changed to the second week back from break (the week starting Monday, January 17th) as a little ‘New Years Surprise.’

Thank you so much to everyone who has participated in this project and I hope you are all excited to see the notes! Just as a reminder: if you liked this project, please let me know, because I would love to do it again sometime this semester.
