The Class of 2022 Graduates From LGB!

By Sophia Lashmar, year 10

LGB’s largest graduating class since the school’s foundation in 1924, the Class of 2022 is nothing if not memorable. They became LGB alumni on Friday, June 17th, in the first fully normal ceremony to be held after two years of COVID-19 restrictions.

To begin the ceremony, the graduates filed into the school’s historic Greek Theatre, filled with their friends, family and teachers. Dr. Hughes started off by praising the graduating class and then spoke several times throughout the ceremony (not leaving out his share of ‘dad’ jokes).

Dr. Hughes was followed by Dr. Hawley and this year’s guest speaker, John McCall MacBain. He addressed the Class of ‘22 and gave a rousing and motivational speech about the importance of failure, and how it can lead to success.

After these inspiring speeches, the graduates walked across the stage to receive their certificates and numerous accolades. The talented cohort was presented with distinctions, merits, IA Gold awards, CAS awards, PTA Awards, and more.

Three graduates were lucky enough to be chosen to give speeches to their graduating class and fellow students. This year’s student speakers were phenomenal, with India and Lili Faye Tamari comparing their LGB years to running an enjoyable, yet challenging, marathon. They were followed by Thomas Hogge, who gave a speech about his time at LGB that was simultaneously funny, emotional and memorable, recognising his friends, teachers and family. Meanwhile, in the baking heat of the Greek Theatre, elegantly dressed graduates and guests alike were desperately hunting for any available fans, water or seats in the shade.

After the Class of ‘22 had exited the Greek Theatre for the last time as LGB students, all of the guests mingled on the grounds to take photos with the new alumni and celebrate the momentous occasion. Although the 2022 graduating class will be missed, they were certainly sent off in style.
