Career Day: An Exciting Look into Students Futures

By Vasileos Orfanos, Year 12

On March 26th 2024, the Carter Hall inside the Middle School was filled with 180 bright Year 12 students who all attended one of Ecolint’s first student Career Days. A fulfilling event where students could ask employees from different organisations about their work environment, it was a perfect opportunity to learn about different companies’ backgrounds and their future insights. This amazing networking event housed the main discussions going on, which were mostly about the environmental challenges of the future, how AI was going to affect the work environment and the different types of products the companies wish to expand in the current market. On board with us at this excellent event were these seven amazing companies: Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Procter and Gamble (P&G), Caterpillar (CAT), Stoneweg Investments, EFG International Bank, Union Bancaire Privée (UBP) and La Tour hospital.

The event began at 8AM, way before any student had even arrived at School. The tables were set and steady, electric plugs were available for employees and three student organisers welcomed and helped the employees arrive smoothly inside our school Campus. Many companies had brought exciting gift bags to give out to students which included: Sports bags, pens and pencils, note pads, bottles and booklets which were all sponsored by the different companies themselves. At 9:15 AM, breakfast was served and employees from all seven different companies had the chance to meet each other, creating a warm environment in the already vibrant Carter Hall. By 9:20 AM, the stands were set and excitement was beginning to overshadow the amazingly set stands. Finally, the event began at 9:45 and excitement was racing to create a professional environment where thoughtful discussions would fill the room. The first batch of 90 students arrived. They had 25 minutes to ask all types of questions and spend time with some of the great individuals who work in the most influential multinationals in the world. One great discussion going on was in Stoneweg’s table, a company that owns and operates real estate investments around the world. Their insights on the environment are clear, as they wish to use more environmentally friendly materials to build their future real estate. One example are triple insulated windows that trap air molecules and force more heat to be generated during the winter. This requires less energy and therefore reduces a substantial amount of costs. Despite the completion of a zero emissions building being near impossible, reducing costs and environmental damage is crucial for the future of the economy.

The second batch of students also really enjoyed the presentations and discussions that were taking place, some even staying behind at break to talk to the representatives. Overall the event was professionally done and gave Year 12 students massive insight into their potential career paths. Whether you’re interested in economics, business, engineering, or even medicine, there are always opportunities to work in multiple different organisations and have different roles. We hope Career Day continues to become an event yearly!
