Putting for Perfection: Inside the 2024 Masters Tournament

By Kennedy Kearns, Year 12

The 2024 Masters have just finished with PGA tour player Scottie Scheffler taking the win. Winning by 4 points, the golfer finished the tournament with a score of -11. Scheffler took home a $3.6 million dollar check for his win, along with a famous Masters green jacket. The 27 year old has won 2 Masters in his 8 year career, this year and in 2022. Scheffler is ranked 1st for Fedex Cup standings, and has been very well recognized.  Many in the golf world have even been starting to compare Scheffler’s success to that of Tiger Woods during his prime.

The Masters is one of the most prestigious golf events the world has ever known. It takes players from PGA, European Tour, EGA, and many more. The tournament takes place in Augusta, Georgia, and the golf course is absolutely stunning. With members like Bill Gates and Peyton Manning, it is one of the most well-known and decorated golf courses there is. Not only is the course extremely beautiful, it is also highly difficult. The course contains many hills and water features, which add to its complexity.

The tournament is composed of 72 holes over the course of a week, with eliminations also taking place, based on how high golfers are able to score. Scottie Scheffler took first place, Swedish player Ludvig Åberg took second, and then the following. Some of the highlights of this year’s tournament was kids day when all players, kids, and families got to come and play at the course. Another important moment of the tournament was seeing the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods, come back and play after being away for 2 years, but still managing to make the cut ending with +5 score.

The Masters is not only a great golf tournament hosting the best golfers in the world, but is also important to the families of the golfers, as well as members. The tournament is also important to generations of families. For example, the Masters holds onto the tradition of having a physical scoreboard that generational families from Georgia have worked on, and it is a time for them to come together and celebrate the sport. Not only is there the golf tournament, but it also has a children’s tournament, a family day, and a Par 3 contest. It is a time to celebrate the sport of golf, and bring together fans, players, caddies, and all the people who influence the sport. The Masters signifies the strengths sports have in bringing together a community, because of how many people it draws in, not just in the world of golf, but also in the general sports world as many go to tournaments to watch and participate. The Masters is an opportunity to celebrate all the great golf athletes from all over the world, and the tradition will continue as others strive to achieve the winning putt, and receive their own green jacket.
