Last weekend, we experienced a spectacle at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. The most
recent chapter of El Clàsico lived up to expectations. It was all there: drama, intensity, and
finesse. From the first to the final whistle, the match showcased energy and competitiveness.
Real Madrid sealed the victory in a 2-1 win against Barcelona, a result which could determine
the outcome of the La Liga championship. Los Blancos managed to increase the gap with the
Catalans – they are now up by 5 points.
Real Madrid debuted the match with full concentration, determined to stop their recent El
Clàsico losing streak. They consistently pressed Barcelona in every area of the pitch and
exploited the wings with their thrilling pace. The Catalans were struggling to impose their rhythm
and so-called “tiki-take” game style. Madrid’s hard work paid off at the 22nd minute when Jude
Bellingham swiftly passed his opponent and slipped a perfect ball through Barça’s defense.
Kylian Mbappé, with his speed and instincts, burst into the space and scored with a low, driven shot past the keeper.
This served as a wake-up call, compelling Barca players to react. At the 37th minute, they
capitalised with a ball recovery right in front of Madrid’s 18-yard box, where Fermin Lopez
equalised with a critical finish. This goal silenced the Bernabeu.
It did not take time for Real Madrid to respond. Vinícius Júnior, with his Brazilian flair, paced past
Barcelona’s defender, crossed the ball for Militao, who nodded it in front of the goal above
the keeper. Bellingham was waiting and passed the ball into the goal, giving Madrid the lead
again right before half-time.
The second half started with Madrid quickly awarded a penalty when Spanish defender Eric
Garcìa handballed as he tackled. Mbappé stepped up to shoot the penalty, but saw his shot
blocked by Szczęsny, Barça’s goalkeeper, who saved his team with his firm arm. Momentum
shifted for Barcelona players, and hope was still among them.
The Catalans pushed hard to earn an equaliser. They managed to settle their game, and ball
possession tilted in their favor. Despite this, Los Merengues’ defense was solid and seemingly
impenetrable. Madrid, with all their experience, took on this pressure with composure and still
continued to threaten with counter-attacks.
As minutes passed and the match was approaching its end, tensions escalated. Heated
confrontations and fouls plagued the final minutes. Chaos broke out, and we experienced a
brawl between both sides, including players off the field. Police intervention was required.
Barcelona’s midfield gem Pedri was sent off. Similarly, Lunin, Madrid’s second keeper, was also
sent off. Additionally, things got heated between Lamine Yamal and Vinícius Júnior, when the
Brazilian mocked Yamal after his disappointing performance saying “You only give back passes”
(Barca Universal), after adding “You talk too much. Speak now.” (Barca Universal) making a
reference to his recent social media posts. Lamine Yamal retaliates “Let’s meet outside and
settle it” (Barca Universal). Both players charged at each other but were quickly separated by
stewards and teammates.
For Real Madrid, the match and outcome symbolized more than three points. It broke their
losing streak and increased their gap with the Catalans, now up to 5 points after 10 games. This
victory is of great importance as it could determine the outcome of the LaLiga championship.
Los Blancos left the stadium with confidence and joy, while Blaugrana players left with
frustration. For Barcelona, the defeat was bitter, amid the chances missed, knowing that their
season is far from over.
