That’s Show Business for You!

By Sarah Hines, Year 11

On the third of October 2025, the singer Taylor Swift released her 12th album: “The Life of a Showgirl”. This is the first one she has made since her record-breaking “Eras Tour” and in some ways mark the end of this era of her life and the beginning of a new one.

She announced the album’s release on the 12th of August when she was invited as a guest on Travis Kelce’s podcast “New Heights”. At that stage, Kelce and Swift had been dating for two years. Later on that month, on the 26th of August, their engagement was officially announced. It was later discovered through interviews that Kelce had actually proposed to her right after the podcast, on the 12th. Swift’s new album is mainly about Travis, as she makes hints to him in several of the songs. Also, the fact that she chose to announce her album on his podcast shows his importance in her album and now her life.

The main theme of this album is fresh starts and how there is a joy that comes after the storm. This strongly contrasts with her previous albums that have a lot of sadder songs in them. Her last album, “The Tortured Poets Department” (also known as T.T.P.D.), is all about heartbreak, since she wrote it right after her breakup with Joe Alwyn, whom she had been with for six years previously. This heartbreak is mentioned through several of her lyrics, for instance, in “The Fate of Ophelia”, she says, “You dug me out of the grave,” and in the song “So long, London” from T.T.P.D., she says, “Two graves, one gun,” thus implying that Travis has saved her from the grave she fell in after the end of her previous relationship. This therefore shows that her music is taking a new direction as it is becoming happier and more mature.

This album also has strong links to the Eras Tour, as she wrote and recorded it while she was performing in Europe. Every few days when she wasn’t performing, she flew to Sweden, where the studio was, and worked on the album. The title “The Life of a Showgirl” is inspired by the Eras Tour and all the work she was doing behind the scenes to get the album done, since during these moments she really was living the life of a showgirl. Also, during the tour, she made several hints to the album. The main colour of this album is orange, and during the tour, she wore many orange costumes. Also, she does the title song of the album with the rising singer Sabrina Carpenter, who was one of the guest singers on the tour and who performed in more than one of her concerts. All of these elements show that the Eras Tour had a big part to play in the creation of this album, and now that it is over, she wants to release this album as a conclusion to this.

Finally, this album has broken more records than any album in history in only the first few days of its release, as the entire album became the top of the charts in less than a week; this is a feat that no artist has ever achieved. Also, “The Life of a Showgirl” has sold the most album units in history: 2.7 million copies on its release day only, and the first song of the album, “The Fate of Ophelia”, became the lead single in the U.S (92.5 million streams) within the first week of its release. Additionally, the debut music video of this song became the most watched on YouTube in 2025 (11.2 million views). This shows that her fans support her new music style and that they too are ready to embark on a new era with her.

In conclusion, the album “The Life of a Showgirl” represents Swift’s transition from her old music and the end of the Eras Tour. This album is therefore opening a new era for Taylor Swift, her fans and the music industry.
