What Is More Important?

By Sarah Hines, Year 11

“What do you mean the line has been shut down?!”
“I-“
“Tomorrow morning, my office.” I stormed off, how could they be shutting down the line,
MY line! Millions will lose their jobs, and more importantly, I would lose my money! To no
one other than James Bowden and his stupid teletransport. I can warn everyone about his
exploits but nobody listens…EVER. How am I even going to get home?
I paused for a second and looked around me, where was I? How was I even supposed to get
back to my villa? I had never been in the city streets outside of the line. I walked back to my
starting point: outside the Westwood Grand Hall, named after me naturally. Nobody was
there, where was my escort? There was some old guy walking a bit further, must be Marcus.
“Marcus!” He didn’t turn around. “MARCUS!” He just kept walking; I couldn’t believe this.
“Turn around or you’re fired” The man finally turned around, but it was defiantly not
Marcus.
“Oh…”
“Whoever you’re looking for probably teletransported, since the line is finally shut.”
“What do you mean finally?!” I stormed towards him.
“It was only a matter of time, no one was even using it anymore, apart from it’s owner of
course” he chuckled “the poor man who has to tell her”
“DO YOU-“ I paused “Wait, what’s wrong with the owner?”
“You live under a rock or something, she’s an egoistic bitch, using 70% of the city’s energy on
her stupid line that is only used by herself and her escort, I bet she doesn’t realise that they
teletransport all the time behind her back.”
“How do you know so much?”
“Well, it’s been happening for over 3 years, everyone knows, the only reason it didn’t close
sooner is because she owns half the city, the mayor didn’t want to get on her bad side.”
“But teletransport…it’s evil, if it’s overused the person will suffer severe health problems”
“Says who?”
“My-” I paused “I heard it from a very reliable scientist”
“If he was Westwood side he probably just made it up so he could keep his job, did you see
any of his data?”

“Well…” I thought for a minute, Fredrick had never even shown me anything, I was just
happy to find a flaw in the design.
“That’s what I thought”
“But what about all the workers, millions will lose their jobs!”
“By millions if you mean five, sure they will, but 95% of the people on the line already
converted to Bowden Teletransport. The line is pretty self-running, in fact isn’t that the
whole point of it?”
“So…what will happen to Westwood now?”
“She’s a billionaire, she can retire and enjoy life, I’m quite envious”
“Aren’t you retired?”
“Me?” He signed, “I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Some things come before age in this world”
“Such as…”
“My dying son, James Bowden”
