The Founders: Where are they now?

By Kingsley Taveau, Founding Editor of Current Events (World News)

I’m Kingsley, I’m graduating this summer with a Masters in Engineering from the University of Edinburgh, and I was the founding editor for the LGB Express’ Current Events (now World News) section. When Catherine [Jay] first approached me about forming a team to renew the student print newspaper into online form, I was sceptical that the quality of writing
would improve. Indeed, at first it was hard to find willing and disciplined writers, and I
thought the LGB Express might go off the rails.

However, I found early on with submissions that the distinguishing quality between the great and the OK articles was how the pieces tied to the school. Ecolint prides itself onpromoting diverse and perceptive minds, and I was curious whether Ecolint students followed the trending social media mould or had their own unique perspectives on global events. The outcome was mixed, but I was blessed with some viewpoints that were both personal and original.

If I were to give one piece of advice for the next round of editors, it is this: Ecolint is overflowing with potential sources; the articles published by the LGB Express should be exclusives, and not some second-rate copy of conventional journalism. Push your writers for the scoop, not the BBC or Huffington Post re-hash.
