Arsenal’s rising star: Max Dowman

By Emma Petzoldt, Year 12,

At the beginning of the 2025/2026 season, the football community started hearing about this 15-year-old youngster playing with Arsenal’s first team in their pre-season tour. However, the world was not ready for what he had in store.

Max Dowman, born the 31st of December 2009 in Chelmsford, Sussex, is an English midfielder or winger for Arsenal Football Club. Dowman joined the club on May 19th 2015 at the age of 8, and has been exceeding expectations ever since. One of his standout seasons came in 2024/2025 with the under-18s squad, where he scored 15 goals in 15 league matches. Even before that, he had already made history by debuting for the U18s at the age of 13 in a match against Southampton FC in 2023. However, he did not stop there; he became the youngest goalscorer in the UEFA Youth League at the age of 14 and 8 months, before then becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history against Everton on the 14th of March 2026, being only 16 years and 73 days old.

Some of Dowman’s best qualities are his exceptional technique, his ability to dribble past players and hold the ball under pressure, as well as his agility and speed. All these finally helped him make his first-team breakthrough in the pre-season tour of the 2025/2026 season in Singapore and Hong Kong, where he played in all three matches. Shortly after, he finally made his Premier League debut on August 23rd, where he was substituted on in the 64th minute against Leeds United. Remarkably, all of this has been happening while he is still completing his education and his GCSE exams scheduled in May.

Max Dowman also plays for the England national team at youth levels, where he also shows off his incredible talent. He made his England debut with the U16s in 2024, and also with the U17s in the same year. Dowman also broke the record for the youngest ever goalscorer for England U19s, beating Fulham player Ryan Sessegnon’s record from 2016.

Max Dowman has yet to start his first match, but has already left a mark on English football at the mere age of 16. His style of play — skilful, energetic and naturally talented in front of the opposition’s goal, where he dribbles past defenders with ease — has made him comparable to some of the football greats, like legend Lionel Messi or Brazilian Ballon d’Or winner Kaká. While such comparisons set a high bar, they show Max’s special talent, making football fans impatient for the future.
